Crossing Over

The third grade year is a year for “crossing over” between primary and upper elementary classes. Third Grade at Community Christian School builds on what has been established in the early years to prepare for the challenging activities of the future.

Primary Bible Reader

Learning God’s plans for our lives and applying it through studying the God of History is the focus of our lessons. Old Testament studies highlighted God’s leaders who acted in history while New Testament studies reflect God’s purpose in history.

Chapel

Various Speakers

Chapel meets weekly to pray, worship, and focus on God for 30 minutes. A variety of guest speakers and the classes themselves provide Biblical messages. Awards for character traits and other achievements are recognized.

Cursive Writing Skill book 3

This includes reading, spelling, grammar, and writing. It promotes sentence diagramming, use of reference books, identifying homophones, adjectives, and adverbs.  Writing projects involve writing a personal narrative, a friendly letter, and other creative tasks. Weekly spelling lists build on phonics and spelling rules learned in earlier years. There is an ACSI Speech Meet and Spelling Bee.

Students have the opportunity to be involved with two extracurricular reading programs. These programs enrich and reward the students for books read.

Arithmetic 3

Lessons involve mastery of the four basic operations, graphs, telling time, calendars, geometry, and estimation. Other lessons practice algebra, ordering, rounding, comparing numbers, elapsed time, subtracting with regrouping, problem solving, making change, and measuring perimeter, area, and volume. There is an ACSI Math Olympics.

Students explore God’s creation using the skills of observing, predicting, classifying, inferring, and measuring. A Christian perspective is applied when studying sound, cells, animals, minerals and rocks, work, skin, and the solar system.

Map and Skills Book

Texas Notebook

Students learn the history of the United States of America by studying many famous Americans. Map skills are developed. Students apply their knowledge to our own country’s geography.

SLi is a curriculum that is designed to train the students to serve others, with the goal of developing the student to become a servant-leader.

Science and Math Software

Computer class provides an engaging and informative environment for computer students. The program provides a comprehensive unit designed to teach Microsoft suite. Many of the software programs incorporate exciting, interactive games to motivate learners. Keyboarding is encouraged in this learning experience.

Music

Focusing on God as our Creator, students utilize their singing voices and listening skills to accompany rhythm bands, measuring notes, high/low scales, chords, composers, praise and worship, families of the orchestra, and AB form.

Art

Art is a hands-on multimedia course with an emphasis on creating artwork based on the basic elements and principles of art. They will also demonstrate through their artwork how to use the elements of art to show movement and express feelings. The Biblical goal is to help the students realize that Creation is God’s artwork and that He was the original Creator and master Artist. The third grade students have the opportunity to show their pieces in a school-wide art show. Those who advance will have their work sent to ACSI regional.

Library

10,000 plus books

Library class reinforces basic library skills including: library etiquette, proper book care, identifying the cover, pages, spine of a book, indexes, exploring call numbers, authors, illustrators, genres of literature, and the Dewey Decimal System. Students are introduced to using electronic encyclopedias, among other innovative technologies.

Physical Education

Physical Education includes physical awareness, loco-motor skills, rhythmic activities, lead-up games for life-long fitness, and sports.

Recess

The students enjoy 30 minutes of adult supervised free play on the elementary playground.

Field Trip

Third grade participates in one field trip a year that is chosen to enhance classroom studies.
