Fourth Grade Curriculum
Reaching Higher
The fourth grade is a time of great change and growth for a child - physically, emotionally, socially, and academically. Students are encouraged to accept these challenges by developing more initiative, practicing better organizational skills, becoming more self-sufficient, and using critical thinking skills to master the more complex concepts.

Learning God’s plans for our lives and applying it through studying the God of History is the focus of our lessons. Old Testament studies highlight God’s leaders who act in history while New Testament studies reflect God’s purpose for the future.

Chapel meets weekly to pray, worship, and focus on God for 30 minutes. A variety of guest speakers and the classes themselves provide Biblical messages. Awards for character traits and other achievements are recognized.

Language is learning how to use words effectively to express God’s love to others. Students develop the ability to apply knowledge of grammatical structure to their own thoughts and words. AR is introduced. AR and Reading Skill Sheets are used to develop comprehension. ACSI Speech Meet and Spelling Bee are student participant activities.

Students have the opportunity to be involved with two extracurricular reading programs. These programs enrich and reward the students for books read.

Speed Drills |
Students will learn place values of numbers through millions. They will learn to recognize and read pictographs, bar graphs, and line graphs. They will learn to find the perimeter of a polygon, rectangle and square using the correct formula. They will understand how to find the area of a rectangle and a square. The students will use the divisibility rules, find the least and greatest common denominator, practice long division, and work with fractions. ACSI Math Olympics is a student participant activity.

Understanding God’s World
Developing Good Health |
Students will discover, observe, explore, investigate and understand how God’s World works. Students will understand science order and reality, matter and motion in the universe, biology, chemistry, and physics which are the foundations of science. Animals, plants, matter, energy, geology, oceanography, astronomy, the human body, and personal hygiene are explored. Students are given the opportunity to participate in the science fair.

The fourth grade history and geography text, The History of Our United States, presents the history and geography of the United States. This text focuses on the early years of discovery, major wars, inventors, inventions, and the causes of our countries progress and development. The students do a study of Texas through the creation of a Texas notebook.

Computer class provides an engaging and informative environment for the computer students. The program provides a comprehensive unit designed to teach Microsoft suite. Many of the software programs incorporate exciting, interactive games to motivate learners. Keyboarding is encouraged in this learning experience.

Students build on previous years of lessons in rests, pitch, scale, and note value. Additionally, they learn progressions, inversion, timelines, composition, orchestra families, and rondo form. Students are given the opportunity to try out for elementary choir and a spring production.

Art

Weekly art class and ACSI Art Competitions are part of this curriculum.

Library
|
10,000 plus books
|
Library class reinforces basic library skills including: library etiquette, proper book care, identifying the cover, pages, spine of a book, indexes, exploring call numbers, authors, illustrators, genres of literature, and the Dewey Decimal System. Electronic encyclopedias among other innovative technologies are explored.

Physical Education
|
|
Physical Education includes physical awareness, loco-motor skills, rhythmic activities, lead-up games for life-long fitness and sports. The Presidential Fitness program offers rewards.

Recess
|
|
The students enjoy 30 minutes of adult supervised free play on the elementary playground.
|
|
Field Trip
|
|
Fourth grade participates in one field trip per year that is chosen to enhance classroom studies.
