Bright Beginning

First grade is a year of high energy and excitement. The lamp of learning will shine brightly as new skills are learned and old skills are polished. The students will develop a love for reading and learn new math concepts. They will learn to let their light shine brightly as we honor God.

Bible

Positive Action for Christ

Bible is the most important half hour of the school day. Bible time includes the pledges to the flags, patriotic songs, Bible hymns, memory verses, prayer time, and the Bible lesson. Students study the lives of Old Testament heroes and the miracles of Jesus.

Chapel

Various Speakers

Chapel meets weekly to pray, worship, and focus on God for 30 minutes. A variety of guest speakers and the classes themselves provide Biblical messages. Awards for character traits and other achievements are recognized.

The language program promotes a comprehension-centered goal for word recognition, emphasizes phonics as the key to word recognition, teaches Christian principles, develops comprehension-centered listening and reading, sets forth writing skills in a natural progression, and provides phonics instruction in a logical format. Grammar and punctuation concepts are taught sequentially. Creative writing and silent reading comprehension activities are used as seatwork each day. Poetry 1 acquaints the students with a variety of good poetry through classroom recitation and memorization. Poems are selected because of their beauty of language, aesthetic appeal, literary greatness, or character-building qualities. There is an ACSI Speech Meet.

Test and Speed Drill Book

Manipulatives and games are used to reinforce the understanding of concepts such as patterns, classification, number relationships, counting patterns, money, geometry, place value, and time. An added emphasis is placed on memorizing addition and subtraction facts.

Health, Safety, and Manners

The science/health texts are designed for oral reading. Students explore living things, the human body, space, earth, matter, motion, and energy. The students derive knowledge through practical experience that involves “hands-on” activities. By studying science/health students can see God’s wisdom. First grade participates in science fair through poster projects.

America: Our Country

America: Our Country provides an opportunity to learn about our country as well as develop a love for America. Students focus on children of the world for several weeks. Units on Community Helpers help students to understand those professions that provide a service to a community.

SLi Curriculum

SLi is a curriculum that is designed to train the students to serve others, with the goal of developing the student to become a servant-leader.

Education City

Math and Science software

Computer class provides an engaging and informative environment for computer students. The program provides a comprehensive unit designed to teach Microsoft suite. Many of the software programs incorporate exciting interactive games to motivate learners. Keyboarding is encouraged through Read, Write, and Type and Education City offers practice and enrichment in the area of reading, math and science.

Music

Music incorporates the use of the voice, listening skills, and various instruments to praise and worship God as our creator. Listening skills are developed by comparing and contrasting classical music.

Art

There is an ACSI Art Competition.

Library

10,000 plus books

Library is available to the students weekly. Basic library skills are taught throughout the school year. Skills such as library etiquette, proper book care, identifying the cover, pages, and the spine of the book are developed. The following skills are introduced: the difference between fiction and non-fiction, using the table of contents, using the book index, and literature appreciation.

Physical Education

Physical Education includes physical awareness, loco-motor skills, rhythmic activities, lead-up games for life-long fitness, and sports.

Recess

The students enjoy 30 minutes of adult supervised free play on the elementary playground. This opportunity is used by the teacher to develop social skills within the students and motor coordination.

Field Trip

Field trips are designed to enhance the curriculum.
